Nestled along the Susquehanna River, the exact age of this waterfront stone house ranges from 1703 to the mid-1800s. However, you can dine in the 1700s Room or the Microbrewery River Room. renovated. The expansive rear lawn is a welcome safety measure for social distancing, as is the outdoor deck overlooking the river. People come for a craft beer or a German beer as well as other German specialties. These include the wiener schnitzel and the jager schnitzel, and the sauerbrauten will be back in a few weeks. In the meantime, settle in for the house specialty, fish and chips ($ 13.95) – hand-breaded cod with fresh-cut fries and macaroni and cheese, available Wednesday through Sunday. This brasserie has a covered terrace and a huge grassy outdoor area with many remote tables. Grab a burger and a craft beer sampler at this gregarious Lewistown restaurant. Bring a small group of buddies and sit outside around fireplaces while listening to live music (from afar). Smoked cooper cheese and applewood smoked bacon, short ribs and minced beef brisket enhance the flavor and texture of the signature Shy Burger ($ 13). Fried Asian Brussels sprouts sprinkled with chopped peanuts ($ 8) and Korean confit pork belly ($ 13) drizzled with kimchi aioli or bacon and pickle thin crusted sourdough flatbread ($ 14) do are not to be overlooked on this innovative menu.
Elk Creek Café and Aleworks

Surrounded by bucolic countryside, the main street of Millheim is made up of modest bungalows. Three-story Elk Creek Cafe & Alehouse, which opened in December 2007, is one of the tallest buildings on the street and, before COVID, one of the busiest. Known for its craft beers, cuisine from local suppliers, and great selection of artists, locals and visitors alike have flocked to this music venue.
At this point, the restaurant offers curbside take-out, which can be picked up Wednesday through Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. BLT ham and salmon pesto ($ 16). Outdoor tent seating is located in the Elk Creekside Pop-Up Beer Garden, behind and in front of the Millheim Fire Co. on-site restaurant, 105 North St., Millheim. It’s first come, first served, and masks are mandatory.

This no-frills pit stop is a must for authentic Latin American cuisine with a twist. The place is small, you might want to call ahead and prepare your order for pickup. Also, be aware that the kitchen stops taking orders after 7 p.m.
Owner Sara Guante has traveled all over the world, as evidenced by the varied dishes on the menu at her eponymous restaurant. While some customers may think the emphasis is on Mexico, the recipes are inspired by Latin America, Spain, and the Caribbean. There is nothing really spicy on the menu and everything is prepared daily with meats and locally grown produce.
Papas locas ($ 12.50) is a meal of freshly cut mountain fries with steak and ground beef and drizzled with house garlic sauce. There are also tacos, burritos, tostadas, and Latin dishes ($ 10 to $ 19.75). Shrimp and Lomo Saltada Steak with Rice Mound and Tripleta Burrito is filled with a trio of turkey, pork and chicken meats. Go to the website and check out the locations of the Guante food trucks.

Between East College Avenue (Route 26) and the Mount Nittany Freeway (Route 322) is this local haunt, known for its craft beers and comfort-oriented pub food. Housed in the former 19th-century Klinger family barn (and at one point located on 220 acres) with a vaulted ceiling and lined with wooden beams, the downstairs dining room is lively and noisy. After a long period of COVID shutdown, the brewing company reopened in August with remote indoor and outdoor seating safely available from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. And take out orders are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Favorites here are the short rib nachos ($ 15) topped with pepperoncini and so massive you’ll need four friends to take on the heap. Also try Happy Valley’s best burger, ($ 14) on sourdough bread with beer-braised shallots, and pepper bacon jam and roasted red peppers and shrimp and heirloom oatmeal ($ 22 ) with Tasso sauce or smoked duck pasta ($ 24).
Pizzeria Faccia Luna

This long-standing trattoria is renowned for its delicious wood-fired sparkling crust pies and pasta with homemade linguini and ravioli. Their signature Faccia Luna pizza has a speckled Arctic char crust sprinkled with roasted red peppers, sausage and freshly sliced mushrooms. But don’t overlook the rich and mouth-watering ravioli with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese in an Alfredo sauce splashed with red wine or the spinach linguini with a refreshing fresh basil pesto and sautéed diced tomatoes. They don’t take reservations so call ahead for take out orders. They now have a large tent on the bridge to improve safe social distancing.

You’ll want to leave early enough in the day to enjoy the rolling farmlands along Route 22 and Route 934 before arriving at this roadside tavern dating from 1804. It’s a mile south of Fort Indiantown Gap. The American pub-style menu features crispy fries ($ 7) stacked with bacon, green pepper, onions, and jalapenos; pound of clams ($ 10) with white wine, garlic and lemon; well done and juicy burgers; and sumptuous 16 oz. New. York strip loin steak ($ 29), harper prime rib 12 oz. queen cut ($ 26) or king cut ($ 31) prepared with juice (available Friday and Saturday evenings). There is live music every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Call ahead for some of the best Thai food at State College. Right now, this tiny place offers take out and delivery, so plan to pick you up for a picnic. There are a lot of vegan or vegetarian choices here. It’s no surprise that this Thai restaurant – so close to the Penn State campus – is popular with college students. Lunch specials such as assorted curries, noodle and rice dishes, and stir fry are also affordable. The most popular dishes are the crispy lemongrass chicken ($ 10.95) on a bed of crispy rice noodles and the drunken noodles soaked in fatty, stretchy sauce ($ 11.75) bathed in a spicy sauce with the garlic and served with your choice of meat.
