Vietnam Attends ADSOM and ADSOM-Plus Working Group Meetings | Politics

Hanoi (VNA) – A delegation from Ministry of National Defence attended the virtual conferences of the
ASEAN Senior Defense Officials Meeting ADSOM Working Group (ADSOM WG) and ADSOM-Plus WG on March 28-29.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Colonel Pham Manh Thang, deputy director of the Ministry of Defense’s foreign relations department, the Quan doi Nhan dan (People’s Army) daily reported.

The events, chaired by Cambodia, continued to discuss issues that were not considered by the ADSOM working group and
GT ADSOM-Plus meetings held in Phnom Penh in February.

The ADSOM working group session reviewed draft documents proposed by Cambodia, including a concept paper on enhancing cooperation in cross-border disease control among defense forces of ASEAN countries, a concept paper on increasing the support mechanism for ASEAN military women to participate in peacekeeping operations, and another on establishing cooperation links between ASEAN defense academies.

This meeting advised on the draft Phnom Penh vision on the role of ASEAN defense agencies in post-pandemic recovery assistance, as well as the draft joint declarations of the meeting of Ministers of Defense of ASEAN (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus. He also envisaged the organization of informal meetings between the defense ministers of ASEAN countries and Plus countries in 2022.

Participants reviewed preparations for the ADSOM and ADSOM-Plus meetings to be held in person in Siem Reap, Cambodia, May 16-18. Some countries have also reported problems with their initiatives.

Meanwhile, the ADSOM-Plus Task Force meeting provided updates on the ADMM-Plus Expert Task Force work plans for 2021 – 2023.

Representing the ADMM-Plus expert working group on peacekeeping co-chaired by Vietnam and Japan, the Vietnamese and Japanese delegates discussed the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) initiative, based on the WPS agenda of the United Nations Security Council.

Based on the WG ADSOMresults of the meeting, the ADSOM-Plus working group conference also discussed the draft ADMM Plus joint statement and preparations for ADSOM-Plus./.
